The Primary Years Programme
The school offers the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), which prepares students to become active participants in a lifelong journey of learning. The PYP is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 4 to 11 (PYP 1 – 7). It focuses on the development of the student as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world outside. The PYP is flexible enough to accommodate the demands of a national or local curriculum and provides the best preparation for students to engage in their next steps in education.
Six themes
The programme is defined by the following six transdisciplinary themes of global significance. These themes are explored using knowledge and skills derived from six subject areas, with a powerful emphasis on inquiry-based learning:
- Who we are
- Where we are in place and time
- How we express ourselves
- How the world works
- How we organize ourselves
- Sharing the planet
Students at ISD are taught in English. In addition to their regular programme, students also have two Dutch lessons, two Physical Education lessons and one Music lesson a week. Art and Drama are built into the regular programme.
