The IB Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (DP) is an assessed two-year pre-university programme aimed at students aged 16 to 18. The DP programme is recognized and respected by leading universities across the world.

Through the DP, schools are preparing students for success at university and in life beyond. With this programme, schools are able to develop students who:

  • have excellent breadth and depth of knowledge
  • flourish physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically
  • study at least two languages
  • excel in traditional academic subjects
  • explore the nature of knowledge through the programme’s unique Theory of Knowledge course.

IB DP Curriculum

The Diploma Programme (DP) curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the Extended Essay (EE).

Students take at least three and no more than four subjects at higher level and the others at standard level – in this way, students can explore some subjects in depth and some subjects more broadly over the two-year programme.

Through the Diploma Programme (DP) core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service.

The programme builds around the learner profile, with an underpinning theme of international mindedness. Approaches to teaching and learning are embedded within all four IB programmes, which are further aligned by each one culminating in a learning experience.

The IB Diploma Programme at ISD

The IB DP aligns with the IB Middle Years Programme at ISD, providing a smooth transition. Students who have successfully completed the MYP will have acquired the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to be successful in the IB DP and beyond. The IB Diploma Programme at ISD is taught in small classes, which allows teachers to offer adequate guidance during the rigorous DP programme.
