Service as Action

At ISD, Service as Action is a vital part of the curriculum and an essential aspect of each student’s learning journey. Like all MYP schools around the world, ISD encourages students to actively engage with their communities in ways that create positive change benefiting both the community and the students themselves.

What is service as action?

Service as Action challenges students to participate in activities that make a meaningful difference to the lives of others and the environment. Service as Action stems directly from the curriculum, linking what students learn in the classroom to real-world issues. It can take many forms: raising awareness, advocating for change, organizing initiatives, and participating in both individual and collaborative projects.

A crucial part of Service as Action is reflection. Students are encouraged to reflect on the impact of their actions, considering both how they have contributed to the community and how the experience has supported their personal growth.

Service for and with others

True service goes beyond “doing good” for others — it is built on collaboration and mutual respect.
Meaningful service begins with understanding the core issues affecting a community, such as poverty, literacy, or pollution. Students are expected to explore these topics in depth, identifying the real needs behind the service opportunities.

Through direct interaction with community members, students learn to communicate openly, work collaboratively, and respect the rights and dignity of everyone involved. This approach nurtures empathy, responsibility, and a deeper commitment to the common good.
