English as Additional Language – EAL

At ISD, the language of instruction is English. For students who are new to English, we provide additional language support to help them access the curriculum with confidence. Our team of specialist EAL (English as an Additional Language) teachers works closely with students to support their language development.

Wherever possible, students remain in the main classroom so they can fully participate in lessons and not miss out on learning opportunities. When needed, targeted EAL support is also provided outside the classroom.

EAL learners will follow the English Acquisition course as part of their programme.

Home languages

At ISD, we are proud of our diverse and multilingual community. Our students come from a wide range of language backgrounds, bringing with them rich cultural and linguistic resources. While English is the language of instruction, we recognise the importance of supporting students in the languages they are most comfortable with to help them access the curriculum and thrive.

Home language learning is strongly encouraged, as maintaining the language spoken at home plays a vital role in students’ cultural identity, general language development, and cognitive growth. It also fosters international mindedness. To celebrate the diversity of languages, cultures, and nationalities in our school, we organise a variety of events throughout the year.

Additionally, our Media Resource Center is expanding its collection of home language books, and we invite families to contribute and exchange resources to support a rich multilingual environment.
