Primary Years
(6-11 years)

Inspiring young learners to explore, grow, and thrive

The Primary Years Programme is designed for children aged 3 to 11. The PYP provides a vibrant and engaging learning environment that nurtures curiosity, creativity, and confidence in young learners.

For our youngest students, aged 4-6 years, we offer the dedicated PYP Early Years Programme — a tailored approach that recognises the unique needs of early learners.

Our six themes

Who we are

Where we are in place
and time

How we express
ourselves

How the
world works

How we organize
ourselves

Sharing the planet

The PYP lays a strong foundation for lifelong learning.

Students are encouraged to view challenges as opportunities, ask meaningful questions, and engage with the world around them with confidence and compassion.

Rooted in inquiry-based learning, the PYP places the student at the heart of the learning process. Children explore ideas, make connections across subjects, and build deep conceptual understanding along with essential life skills.
Our classrooms are student-centered, collaborative, and inclusive. Learning is driven by curiosity and enriched through hands-on experiences and open-ended exploration. Students are empowered to think critically, work together, and take ownershdipip of their learning journey.

At ISD, education is about more than just academic achievement—it’s about developing the whole child. The PYP supports children in becoming caring, responsible individuals who understand themselves and their place in the world. It fosters international mindedness and encourages students to take meaningful action in their communities.

The PYP curriculum framework

At the heart of the framework is student agency, which drives the three foundational elements of school life:

The learner

Recognising students as capable, curious, and active participants in their own learning.

Learning and teaching

Promoting inquiry, creativity, and reflection through rich, purposeful experiences.

The learning community

Valuing strong relationships between students, teachers, and families to support each child’s growth.

Six transdisciplinary themes

Through six transdisciplinary themes, students explore big ideas that matter globally and personally—developing their knowledge, skills, and the attributes of the IB Learner Profile, such as being open-minded, principled, and reflective.

Students at ISD are taught in English. In addition to their regular programme, students also have two Dutch lessons, two Physicial Education lessons and one Music lesson a week. Art and Drama are built into the regular porgramme.
